How to Calculate Product Expiry Date from Manufacturing Date

Every packaged product — from food and medicine to industrial chemicals and consumer goods — has a shelf life. The shelf life tells you how long the product remains safe, effective, and of acceptable quality under recommended storage conditions. Our product expiry date calculator uses a simple but precise formula: Expiry Date = Manufacturing Date + Shelf Life.

Steps to Calculate Product Expiry Date

  1. Find the manufacturing date on the product packaging. It is usually labelled "Mfg. Date", "Production Date", "Packed On", or "Date of Manufacture".
  2. Find the shelf life on the product label or product insert. It may be stated as "Best Before X months from manufacturing" or "Use within X years".
  3. Enter both values in our calculator above and click Calculate to get the exact expiry date.

Indian Packaging Regulations for Expiry Dates

In India, various laws and regulatory bodies govern the labelling of expiry dates on different product categories:

Under the Legal Metrology Rules, most packaged products sold in India must display the date of manufacture, shelf life, and "best before" or "use by" date on their labels.

Product Tip: When you cannot find an expiry date on a product, look for the shelf life information in the product manual or insert. Some products print shelf life as "Best used within X months of manufacture" without a specific date.

Products That Rarely Display Expiry Dates

Some products such as certain household chemicals, electronic components, and industrial goods may not display a standard expiry date. However, they often have a recommended usable life stated in the product documentation. Use our calculator with the manufacturing date and this recommended period to estimate when the product should be replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

The formula is: Expiry Date = Manufacturing Date + Shelf Life Period. For example, if a product is manufactured on 15 March 2024 with a shelf life of 18 months, the expiry date is 15 September 2025. Our calculator handles this automatically, including month-end and leap year edge cases.
If only the expiry date is shown, you can subtract the shelf life to find the manufacturing date, but this is not usually necessary. The expiry date itself is the key information. Our main calculator at expirydatecalculator.online uses manufacturing date + shelf life, which is needed when only the manufacturing date is printed (and the expiry date is absent).
Our current calculator handles one calculation at a time. For multiple products, simply run the calculator again for each product by clicking the Reset button and entering the new details. Each calculation is instant, making it quick to check multiple products in succession.
No. A product's expiry date refers to its safe use or consumption period as set by the manufacturer for product quality and safety. A warranty end date is a separate legal commitment by the manufacturer or seller to repair or replace the product if it fails due to defects within a specified period after purchase.
