Tea Shelf Life Guide: How Long Does Tea Last?

Tea does not "expire" in the same way as medicine or food — it does not become unsafe to drink after a certain date. However, it does lose its flavour, aroma, and beneficial antioxidant properties over time. For premium teas like TWG, maintaining quality is everything. Knowing when your tea is past its best helps you enjoy it at its peak.

Frequently Asked Questions

TWG tea has a "best before" date rather than a hard expiry date. The tea does not become unsafe after this date, but the flavour, aroma, and beneficial properties will diminish significantly. For the best TWG tea experience, consume within the recommended period — typically 18–24 months for sealed tins and 6–12 months after opening.
Stale tea is easy to identify: the aroma is flat or absent, the colour of the dry leaves appears dull, and the brewed tea lacks depth and flavour complexity. If your tea has developed an off smell (musty, mouldy, or chemical), it may have been stored improperly and should be discarded.
Properly stored loose leaf tea that is past its best before date is generally safe to drink, though the taste will be noticeably weaker and less complex. Tea does not usually harbour harmful bacteria if stored in dry conditions. However, if the tea shows any signs of mould or has an unusual odour, discard it.
Generally, both Assam and Darjeeling black teas have similar shelf lives of 2–3 years sealed and 12–18 months after opening. Assam is a robust, full-bodied tea that may retain its character slightly longer, while Darjeeling's delicate muscatel notes fade faster. First Flush Darjeeling is especially time-sensitive and is best consumed within 6–12 months of harvest.
