Understanding Medicine Expiry Dates

Every medicine has a printed expiry date that indicates the last day the manufacturer guarantees the product's full potency and safety. Beyond this date, the chemical composition may degrade, making the medication less effective or, in rare cases, potentially harmful.

How to Read Medicine Manufacturing & Expiry Dates

Indian drug packaging regulations require manufacturers to print both the manufacturing date ("Mfg. Date") and the expiry date ("Exp. Date") on all pharmaceutical products. Dates are usually printed as MM/YYYY or MM-YYYY.

If only the manufacturing date is given along with the shelf life in the product insert, use our calculator to determine the exact expiry date.

Important: Never use medicines past their expiry date. Always consult a registered pharmacist or doctor for guidance on medicine storage and disposal.

Safe Disposal of Expired Medicines

Expired medicines should not be flushed down the sink or thrown in regular household waste. In India, many pharmacies and hospitals participate in drug take-back programs. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recommends returning expired medicines to authorised collection centres for safe disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. After the expiry date, manufacturers can no longer guarantee the medicine's potency, safety, or effectiveness. Some medicines can degrade into harmful compounds. Always discard expired medicines and consult your doctor or pharmacist for a replacement prescription.
"Mfg. Date" stands for Manufacturing Date — the date on which the medicine was produced by the pharmaceutical company. Combined with the shelf life stated on the package, you can calculate the expiry date using our medicine expiry date calculator.
Most tablet medications have a shelf life of 2–5 years from the manufacturing date, depending on the formulation and storage conditions. The exact shelf life is stated on the packaging. Store medicines in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maximise their shelf life.
The batch number alone does not tell you the manufacturing date — that information is only available to the manufacturer. However, every regulated medicine package must display the manufacturing date and/or expiry date directly on the label, so you can use those dates in our calculator.
